To my cousin Oleg on his wedding

Roses are red, violets are blue
Now that you’re married – what will you do?
Parties will end and life will set in
How do you wish for it all to begin?

*********

How do you take on this gift and protect it?
How do you make it stand tough in the storm?
How do you face all the bad and deflect it?
How do you merge your two lives and transform?

All of these questions, plus who cleans the dishes
Mortgage, careers, dirty diapers and sex.
How do you reach all your genuine wishes
While in a world that’s extremely complex?

Laughter – for one, at yourselves and your worries
Humbleness also will show you the way
And there’s one more that will withstand the flurries
And make tomorrow an easier day

Growing together’s the final component
Growing apart is what most couples do
Marriage’s most unrelenting opponent
Making sure one plus one won’t equal two.

Growing together is glue to the marriage
It is the essence that shines through it all
It is the wheels to your fairytale carriage
Letting you ride to your sunset not crawl

Never belittle your partner’s ambition
Always find interest in each others dreams
Do not think twice about any tradition
If it is splitting you two at the seems

She likes a book- then my friend, better read it
He takes up golf, go with him to the links
She wants to cook – help her out and then eat it
And in the process find out what she thinks

People have interests – that’s part of the journey
Letting each other have time on their own
All of that’s true – but make sure that each morning
You aren’t reading the paper alone

Marriage is not about being a good roommate
Kids and vacations are just a small part
Most of the reason for finding a soul mate
Is so that both of you grow from the start

Katya, Olezhik, today’s the beginning
Go build a life that fulfills both of you
Love is a word – you determine its meaning
Make your roses red and your violets be blue!

To my friend Neta for her wedding

Life is experience driven
Like a multilayered cake
Each layer to you is given
To see what choice you will make

Moments make up each layer
One of them’s certainly this
And if you will forgive this prayer
Of another I will reminisce.

                *****

One summer evening in July
Only twelve years ago
My stunning bride to be and I
Took Neta to a show

We’ve done that many times before
Hang out with little sis
And talk to one that we adore
About the things we’ve missed

She’d talk to us about her school
The dolphins on her wall
How Britney Spears is really cool
And purple’s best of all!

                *****

That night was film night
And we chose, something a bit risqué
But thought – a comedy’s all right
And she should be OK

The movie’s title looked quite clean
A patriotic tale…
The actors, whom we’ve never seen
Seemed unlikely to fail

And so we went but from scene one
I grew a bit concerned
Although the movie was great fun
What lessons would she learn?

To make it easier on you
And to avoid details
I will present a little clue
Of subject it entailed

There are 4 teens, they’re not too cool
But all have an affinity
For trouble and for leaving school
Without their ….virginity

The movie is…..American Pie
That’s where we took our sis
The only question on my mind
“Was ignorance her bliss?”

That, after we walked out the door
I turned to her and asked.
Hoping, as never had before
Some things to her were masked.

Alas, without a hint of doubt
She turned, as I recall
And said, “So that’s what High School is about?
I‘m starting it this fall!”

Oy Vey, I thought, this stage is new
The dolphins may be there
But little Netachka we knew,
Had now become aware.

No longer little or naïve
How would she handle it?
Whom, and in what will she believe?
Which road will she see fit?

                *****

Four short months after that event
My bride to be and I
Got married under Chuppa’s tent
With Neta standing by.

But now we’re here, the tables turned
Today you are the bride
And we are not at all concerned
With man that’s at your side

Twelve years have passed
And just like then, you are about to start
A new adventure with more tests
That will be just as hard

But, knowing you the way we do
To this we can attest
Whatever life throws out at you
We know you’ll do your best!

To my brother for his 50th birthday

On this surprising Friday night
We’ve gathered here in all our might
With friends and family abound
To party over something round…

I did say something…not someone
Although someone is kind of round
But in a cute and cuddly way
OK, OK…..about today.

That round thing that today we toast
The number that upsets our host
The figure that defines his age
Him turning over a new page….

I can go on with metaphors
But let’s take issue at the core
My brother’s 50, whoopty doo
That doesn’t mean  - To life, Adieu!

It doesn’t mean he’s getting old
It doesn’t mean he’s getting bold
It’s no offense to those that are
If so, you’re shiny like a star!

And speaking of…the stars I mean
For they allow me to begin
The exploration of his age
To see who’s also on his page!

I searched the heavens and have found
Half dozen biggest stars around
That, like my dearest brother here
Will celebrate 5-0 this year!

Thus, I will need your help with this
So please, before you will dismiss
My feeble pains to entertain
I need for you to guess their names…

                        *****

He – is the biggest star of all
For twenty mill – he’ll take your call
With him – Impossible to loose
His name my friends, of course – Tom Cruise

Her scene in Mischief stole my heart
To Cruise’s McGuire she was tart
But to Travolta she was destined
The hottie’s name is Kelly Preston
From hot to funny we progress
He greeted fame with talking ass
A bit bizarre but never scary
Your pet detective is Jim Carrey

A few good men are hard to find
She did that twice, for a short time
She is the one that Ghost adored
Still hot at 50 – Demi Moore

He maybe Livin’ on a Prayer
But he is Always on the air
His life is like a Blaze of Glory
He’s awesome and he’s Jon Bon Jovi

We’ve noticed him in Bruce All Mighty
At forty he met Aphrodite
In Office he was raising hell
But we all love our Steve Carell…

                        *****

That’s just six I’ve outlined
Mathew Broderick, Wesley Snipes
Add Ralph Fiennes and Jodie Foster
Forty five are in your roster

All are 50 and don’t care
They are happy, they have flare
They don’t think they’re old at all
Tom Cruise isn’t even tall

That, my brother, is their lesson
So please focus on that essence
They don’t care how old they are
That’s what makes them a true star

And you have that spark inside
One that you so often hide
Screw the numbers, just go dance
And your age won’t stand a chance

You are playful and you’re funny
You’re the energizer bunny
Life is bubbling right through
Let if flow – for it is you

Life is movement, life is laughter
Never mind what happens after
Just allow yourself to be
Then the time will set you free!
